After Shubhashree Ganguly posted her pictures with football legend Lionel Messi, she was subjected to online trolling. And now, the Bengali actor has revealed that netizens are now attacking her children with death threats on social media. Her photos with Messi were criticised as she was seen in the VIP engagement of a ‘mismanaged’ event, during his visit to Kolkata recently.
Taking to her Instagram handle, Shubhashree addressed the concern and requested people not to target her family.
“The thing which came as a shock to me is how soon it descended into abusive language,” she said in a video, calling it “deeply disturbing” and how the hatred can “translate into real-life fear, particularly if it involves a family being caught in the crossfire.”

She clarified that after the interaction at the hotel, the organisers had asked her to come to the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. But, she was inside the tents when the crowd of people broke out after Messi came on the field. She couldn’t post her pictures with Messi because of the internet jammers at the stadium and it was shared a while after, which might have been the wrong timing as per the situation.
The actor added, “I was running late for a shoot and left the stadium in haste once the chaos began. After reaching the shoot location, I went straight to my makeup van and after that I began filming, realising much later that my photo had gone up at the wrong time and had provoked severe backlash on social media.”
Netizens asked why she was there in the first place, owing to the displeasure among fans who paid a high ticket fee and couldn’t even catch a glimpse of Messi. A section of people also linked her to the TMC party, because her husband, film director Raj Chakraborty is a Congress party politician. Reportedly, he has been doing everything in his power to stop this harassment. Several fans and her colleagues dropped comments under her post to condemn the harassment.
Subhashree Ganguly questioned trolls if she was being targeted because she belonged to the Bengali film industry or because she is a woman. She even mentioned that actors Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan had also met Messi and clicked pictures with him and she was asked to represent her industry.
The Kolkata event chaos began after the footballer left the venue due to crowd mismanagement, leaving thousands of fans in displeasure of not being able to catch a glimpse, despite spending money on the tickets. Lionel Messi‘s Kolkata visit was part of his GOAT Tour of India 2025. He also attended events in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi.
