Actor Twinkle Khanna has always been extremely candid about her life and her relationships. Twinkle grew up under the care of her single mother Dimple Kapadia, as Dimple walked out of Rajesh Khanna’s house when Twinkle and her younger sister were still very young, and Twinkle has often recalled the time when her mother was the single most influential woman in her life. During a recent interview, Twinkle revealed that it was her mother who set an example for her and taught her how to thrive as a woman in a patriarchal world.
The author-actor talked to BBC India recently while promoting her new book. Right off the bat, she was asked about how exactly she shaped up to be the kind of person she is. Without skipping a beat, Twinkle credited her mother for being the right influence and said, “I am probably one of those women who have taken a step back to equality. I always thought that we (women) were superior, and I grew up with that notion. I grew up with a single mom, and we were all women in the house. My mother was the earning member.”
Talking about Dimple, she continued and shared an anecdote from when she was a kid. “I have this distinct memory of my mother. My sister and I used to have our mattress on the floor, and we used to share the room with my mother and aunt. My mother would wake up at 5 am and would work out around us. She was an actress with three shifts a day, and she had to look good while taking care of the house. I would look at her, and she was my superwoman, and she was even wearing tights. That set a precedent for me,” said Twinkle.
When asked about whether feminism was something she was taught, Twinkle revealed that it wasn’t something explicitly told to her. She added that it was her mother’s actions and the way she behaved around them that taught her how it should be for a woman.
She said, “We never spoke about feminism; that word wasn’t there. But it was very clear that this is the way it’s going to be. It has very clearly shaped my choices. I have been married for about 25 odd years, and so has my sister. We never thought about changing our last name; we are the Khanna sisters. I have a crazy aunt who keeps saying, ‘You aren’t Khanna sisters; you are pagal (mad) sisters.’ I said if I had to change my name, I’d change my first name. It’s Twinkle, and I am actually happy with Khanna.”
Dimple Kapadia and actor Rajesh Khanna got married in 1973, when Dimple was just 16 years old and Rajesh was 32. The marriage quickly turned sour, as Dimple wanted to continue working and live on her own terms, which reportedly did not sit right with Rajesh. The couple got separated, and Dimple raised her two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, while managing a successful career in Bollywood.
