Actor Anushka Sharma and Indian cricketer Virat Kohli’s destination wedding in Italy made headlines back in 2017. The celebrity couple, who recently completed 8 years of marriage, were the talk of the town for having secret meetings with planners and making bookings under fake names for their wedding.
Now, during a conversation with Karan Johar, Pulkit Samrat, and Kriti Kharbanda for Manyavar and Mohey, Anushka-Virat’s wedding planner Devika Narain opened up about their wedding brought the biggest change in people’s approach towards weddings. In fact, Karan called their wedding a ‘covert operation’ because no one knew about it until the big day.

The filmmaker started off by mentioning how Anushka and Virat’s nuptials came as a surprise and it changed the entire thought process of destination weddings. “The texture and DNA of weddings, especially destinations weddings has changed. I would give absolute credit to the Anushka-Virat wedding, because I remember the whole country woke up to this wedding no one knew was happening. It was a covert operation almost. There wasn’t even a single hint that something like this is going to happen. From her wedding walk to this location, and just them, everybody fell in love,” he said.
When asked about the main cost factor behind their wedding, the planner, Devika replied, “Logistics is pretty much it. Why that wedding changed the gambit was because people realised they could do whatever they wanted at weddings.”
She further elaborated, “I think that was the biggest change because before that, people were just listening to their parents about how things happen at weddings. People started thinking that they did it in their own way, can we also do whatever we want?”
Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli tied the knot secretly in Italy on December 11, 2017, after dating since 2013. The couple got blessed with two children – daughter Vamika (2021) and son Akaay (2024). They are currently building their life in London, away from the spotlight to give their kids a normal childhood.
