Recent reports suggested that filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and actor Aamir Khan have pressed pause on the making of the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic they’d announced earlier this year. They were planning to start the film early next year, but Hirani and Abhijat Joshi had been co-writing the script so that Aamir can give his final go-ahead.
Now, both Aamir and Hirani don’t seem to be too happy with the script of the biopic of the ‘Father of Indian Cinema.’ So, they’ve now diverted their energies towards familiar territory. Hirani has reportedly locked the script of the sequel to his and Aamir’s 2009 blockbuster dramedy 3 Idiots, which also starred Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, among others.
As per Pinkvilla, all the four actors will reprise their roles in the sequel, which is set 15 years after the events of the climax of the first part, with the characters having gone their separate ways. 3 Idiots ends when Kareena’s Pia, Madavan’s Farhan, and Sharman’s Raju manage to find Aamir’s Rancho aka Phunshukh Wangdu at a school in Leh, Ladakh. Kareena and Aamir kiss and reunite before he gets the last laugh over Omi Vaidya’s Chatur.
It’s not clear yet whether other memorable characters from 3 Idiots will reprise their roles too, including Chatur, Boman Irani’s Viru Sahastrabudhhe aka Virus, Mona Singh’s Mona Sahastrabudhhe, and Javed Jaffrey’s Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad. The first part was co-written by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Vinod Chopra Films.
The report further states that the team of the first part feels the script of the sequel is “as funny, as emotional, and as meaningful as” 3 Idiots. Hirani has long had the seed of an idea for 3 Idiots 2, but he spent enough time to crack the script in order to match up to the legacy of the first part, which was inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s 2004 bestseller Five Point Someone.
Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi, and Vidhu Vinod Chopra have also been trying to crack the script of the threequel of the blockbuster Munna Bhai franchise, starring Sanjay Dutt as the titular gangster and Arshad Warsi as his loyal sidekick Circuit. “With part 3 the thing is that once it was not happening at all, but now Raju (Hirani) is actually working on it. He is seriously working on it, and it seems like it should happen now,” Arshad had revealed in an exclusive interview with SCREEN earlier this year.

Last year, Hirani had also hinted at the same during the unveiling of SCREEN in Mumbai. “The most important factor is that the next instalment has to get better than the previous films. But now, I have a unique idea. Of course, over the course of 100 years of cinema, everything has been said. But yeah, I am working on that idea,” said the filmmaker.
