Masaba Gupta, 36, went down memory lane, opening up about her childhood, shows, and her professional work in a chat with former Tennis champion Sania Mirza on the latter’s podcast. Talking about her item song in Kesari Chapter 2, in which she is seen in a black corset, the fashion designer shared, “This one is very recent. I am at my fittest. This was two days after my wedding. I did an item song in the film Kesari 2. I was doing a burlesque number. I was very excited. I was wearing this corset. It was so tight that I had an acidity attack. So, I want to let you all know. I was chugging Eno and pretending to be hot.”

Taking a cue from her revelation, let’s understand how tight clothing can give you acidity.

Dr Aniket Mule, consultant, internal medicine, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said a very tight outfit, especially around the waist, puts extra pressure on the stomach. “When that happens, stomach acids can move upward, creating a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Many people think acidity only comes from food choices, but physical compression plays a big role, too. When the stomach doesn’t get enough room to expand, even normal digestion becomes stressful for the body,” said Dr Mule.

Dr Mule noted that the stomach naturally produces acids to break down food. “When the abdominal area is squeezed for too long, this acid can rise toward the food pipe. The food pipe isn’t built to handle acid, so even short bursts can cause discomfort, sharp burning, nausea, or a sour taste. Someone already dealing with long working hours, irregular meals, or stress becomes even more sensitive to such triggers,” said Dr Mule.

An acidity attack can happen to anyone, even without food being the villain. The body reacts strongly when it’s compressed, strained, or pushed beyond its comfort zone.

Are corsets and tight outfits always risky?

Not always, said Dr Mule. “The issue starts when the outfit is too tight, worn for long hours, or used during activities that demand a lot of movement. “Occasional use generally doesn’t cause long-term issues, but frequent compressive clothing can make acidity episodes more common,” said Dr Mule.

What signs should someone pay attention to?

Dr Mule said that a sudden heaviness or sharp burning in the upper abdomen is the most common one. “Some people feel discomfort while breathing or talking because the chest feels tight. Others may feel bloated, excessively burpy, or unusually tired. If the discomfort continues even after removing the outfit, that means the pressure has already triggered irritation,” said Dr Mule.

What should one do when such acidity hits?

Loosening clothes or changing into something comfortable usually brings instant relief. “Sipping water slowly helps settle the stomach. Some people find that walking for a few minutes eases the burning sensation. Resting upright, not lying flat, also prevents acid from rising again. Spicy or oily food should be avoided for the rest of the day because the stomach is already irritated,” advised Dr Mule.

How can someone prevent such attacks in the future?

*Choosing outfits that allow some movement around the waist makes a big difference.
*Eating on time, not skipping breakfast, staying hydrated, and avoiding long gaps between meals help the stomach stay stable.

*Stress management plays a big role, too, since stress often triggers acidity even without food involvement.

“If someone must wear a tight outfit for work or performance, short breaks in between and mindful meal timings reduce the risk of discomfort,” said Dr Mule.
